“SPECS are the beginning of a new era in computing. For decades, computers have asked us to look down, sit still, or step out of the moment. SPECS bring computing into the world around us where we live, work, learn, create, and connect,” said Evan Spiegel, Co-Founder and CEO of Snap Inc.
The company reports that SPECS weigh between 132 and 136 grams depending on the model and feature a 51-degree field of view, support prescription inserts, and offer up to four hours of mixed-use battery life. A charging case provides up to four additional charges.
The device is capable of displaying navigation, AI-powered assistance, entertainment content, and workplace tools directly within a user's field of vision. The company also announced new developer tools and updates designed to expand the SPECS ecosystem.
“The smartphone put our lives in our pockets. SPECS put computing into the world, where life actually happens,” said Spiegel.
The launch follows more than a decade of investment by Snap in augmented reality technologies, including operating systems, displays, optics, computer vision, and developer tools, according to the company.
As part of the launch, Snap introduced a global marketing campaign photographed by Steven Meisel featuring Jimmy Butler, Imogen Heap, Hoyeon, Jack Harlow, and Kaia Gerber.
“With SPECS, AI is not intelligence trapped in a chat box. It is intelligence that can see what you see, understand what you’re trying to do, and help you in the moment,” said Spiegel.
SPECS include privacy features such as user permission controls, on-device data processing, and a visible recording indicator light.
